Why EanMe?

Our Church newsletter ‘EanMe’ – literally meaning “unless” in Greek – has its roots in St. Thomas the apostle’s words of doubt. According to many senior members of our Church, ‘EanMe’ was named so by Rev. Honest Chinniah who served as Presbyter here in the 1970s. It is based on St. Thomas’ famous words to the Risen Lord in John 20:25: “…Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

‘Unless’ or ‘except’ in the King James Version is translated from the Greek word ‘Eanme’ εανμε (eh-an’ may) meaning : before, but, except, not or unless. The word ‘Eanme’ is used in the Bible in other places too. In John 3:3, Eanme is used to refer to “seeing the kingdom of God.” The usage here is to stress that “unless, negating all other possibilities, or except under the circumstance of being born again, one cannot see the kingdom of God.”
